PRESENTATION OF THE ASSOCIATION

Founded in 2014, Respect Zone has been working for over ten years to combat all forms of online violence, striving for a safer and more respectful internet.

With a dedicated team working daily in the field, whose expertise complements our own, we deploy practical and accessible solutions for anyone who may encounter online violence.

We firmly believe that every user should be better equipped to adopt responsible, respectful, and civic-minded internet practices. As a trusted partner, we take action at every stage of online violence, working with everyone:

  • to raise awareness and prevent it (tailor-made interventions and training programs closely aligned with communities)

  • to support victims (legal assistance and mediation)

  • to advance public debate (advocacy, reports, and thematic charters)

Our legal and digital education expertise, in line with evolving technologies and practices, combined with our close ties to the field, allows us to be a trusted partner for schools, businesses, public organizations, and local authorities. All our actions are guided by four essential values: respectful, positive, attentive, and innovative.

OUR STORY

For over 10 years, Respect Zone has been fighting against all forms of online harassment and has become a leading organization for victims, institutions, businesses, and anyone facing harassment. For a safer, more respectful, and more tolerant internet.

In the context of the massive use of social media, Respect Zone founder Philippe Coen and his children witnessed the online abuse, cyberbullying, and hate speech rampant on the web. Recognizing the urgent need to empower the public and promote a more respectful and caring online environment, Philippe Coen brought together a group of committed lawyers and digital rights advocates, as well as individuals sensitive to the early signs of this scourge, to help develop inclusive and practical solutions. This led to the creation of the NGO Respect Zone.

Respect Zone's approach is based on the conviction that change begins with education and awareness. This involves educational programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns at the community level (schools, universities, businesses, municipalities, sports centers). We have also worked closely with social media platforms and governments to promote respectful online practices and influence regulations accordingly.

Today, Respect Zone continues to work towards a safer and more respectful internet, diversifying its activities to adapt to societal changes.

OUR ADVOCATES

The Respect Zone Legal Circle currently comprises around sixty lawyers, legal directors, legal professionals, and law professors, who work primarily on drafting contributions:

  • for public authorities, suggesting new approaches to addressing and understanding situations of cyberviolence, cyberharassment, and online hate (e.g., contributions to the Avia Law, DSA, amendments, etc.);

  • internally, to continue reflecting on topics of interest (defining the concepts of digital human dignity, respect, online hate, etc.).

The Circle also houses a criminal unit composed of various lawyers who support and represent Respect Zone when a case requires civil action.

It also coordinates our victim support program by assisting volunteer associates from partner firms who wish to take on the case of a potential victim and represent them pro bono. It participates in the management of the Respect Zone legal clinic for digital human rights hosted at Paris-Dauphine University – which works in particular on the design and dissemination of tools for access to law.
